Illuminating Bristol’s Libraries: Our Contribution to the City Leap Project

At Business Electrical, we take pride in delivering sustainable commercial electrical contractor solutions that reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency. As part of the Bristol City Leap initiative, we recently completed an LED lighting upgrade across four libraries in Bristol: Clifton Library, Bishopston Library, Southmead Library, and Junction 3 Library. As a place-based electrical contractor in Bristol, we’re particularly proud that we were chosen to efficiently illuminate these beacons of our community!

Project Overview

We were approached by Bristol City Leap, a partnership between Bristol City Council and Ameresco UK, seeking a Bristol Electrical Contractor for their libraries project. The primary objective of this was to replace outdated fluorescent lighting with modern LED alternatives. This upgrade was designed to improve energy efficiency, lower electricity consumption, and contribute to Bristol’s ambitious carbon reduction goals. By implementing these upgrades, we not only enhanced the lighting quality within these community spaces but also supported Bristol’s journey towards a greener future.

Scope of Work

Our commercial electricians conducted a comprehensive assessment of the existing lighting systems and executed the following key tasks:

  • Energy and Carbon Savings Verification: We measured the power consumption of the old fluorescent fixtures and compared them with the new LED fittings to confirm the anticipated energy savings.
  • Installation of LED Lighting: We systematically (and quietly!) replaced outdated fluorescent lamps with high-efficiency LED fixtures, ensuring compliance with modern energy standards.
  • Power Consumption Analysis: Using True RMS power meters, we recorded the wattage before and after installation to validate energy efficiency improvements.
  • Commissioning and Quality Assurance: All installations were tested and verified to meet predefined performance benchmarks before project completion.

Project Impact

The transition to LED lighting has yielded significant benefits, including:

  • Energy Efficiency: LED lighting consumes significantly less power than traditional fluorescent lamps, leading to notable reductions in energy usage.
  • Cost Savings: Lower energy consumption translates to reduced electricity bills for these public libraries.
  • Environmental Benefits: The project supports Bristol’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, aligning with the broader sustainability goals of the City Leap initiative.
  • Improved Lighting Quality: Visitors and staff at these libraries now enjoy better lighting conditions, enhancing their overall experience in these public spaces.

Looking Ahead

This project exemplifies how small yet strategic upgrades can contribute to a city’s sustainability mission. By improving energy efficiency in public buildings, we are helping pave the way for a cleaner, greener future.

At Business Electrical, we remain committed to delivering impactful solutions that drive environmental and economic benefits. We are proud to have played a role in Bristol City Leap and look forward to continuing our work in energy efficiency projects across the region.
